Notes for week of 15 April, 2024

⤳ This week was all about seeing friends in pubs, bars and restaurants. ⤳ But before that kicked off, I went to the National Gallery to see The Last Caravaggio. It’s free and definitely worth a look if you’re passing (wow, I just damned Caravaggio with faint praise didn’t I). ⤳ Afterwards I went next door for a look round the National Portrait Gallery where I saw this gorgeous selfportrait by Dame Ethel Walker, who has to be the best dressed person in the whole building. ⤳ I also read t...

Notes for week of 8 April, 2024

⤳ Finally got see Dune 2 on the big screen, just before it left the cinema. It’s an impressive spectacle, and it didn’t feel as long as its 2h 47m (!) running time; but I don’t think I was as blown away as others have bene. Something about the scifi setting leaves me a tiny bit cold (or maybe it’s Denis Villeneuve’s disdain for dialogue) and I’m not buying the ChalametZendaya thing not enough chemistry there. ⤳ Spent quite a bit of time in the garden this week. Cleaning up the barbecue and ...

Notes for all of March, 2024

⤳ Just a quick roundup because I skipped a few weeks (mainly because I was on holiday over a couple of weekends, but other things happened too). ⤳ Part of Nina’s birthday present was a trip to the Barbican to see Death of Stalin In Concert! It’s one of Nina’s favourite films, and it was a real treat to see the BBC Symphony Orchestra in full force. Plus Armando Iannucci and Michael Palin did the Q&A afterwards. It was a great time. ⤳ I binged the whole of Netflix’s Ripley in the la...

Everything I read while I was on holiday

Last week, Nina and I flew off to Antigua for a week. Bit of a luxury, but it was Nina’s birthday and she really needed a ‘do nothing but sit on a beach’ holiday. I struggle a bit with those kind of holidays because I tend to go a bit stir crazy after a few days, but I just about managed to power on through this one :) Basically, it was a week of eating, drinking and reading. A lot of reading. Books: ⤳ O Brother by Jon Niven My own brother bought me this as a present last year, but I put o...

Notes for week of 26 February, 2024

⤳ It was a busy work week this week, all sorts of things were kicking off at Brink (you can read about them in this LinkedIn post) and the work I’m doing around the company’s comms is starting to really gain momentum now. All that planning and strategymaking we did last year is about to start bearing fruit over the next few weeks, so it’s very exciting. ⤳ Elsewhere, the house is getting back to normal after a weeks of decorating work, which means I’ve spent a fair few hours putting pictures ...

Notes for week of 19 February, 2024

⤳ I did even more record shopping this week. Met up with my friend, John in Hackney to visit Stranger Than Paradise, YoYo Records, BBE, World of Echo and Idle Moments (and some stall on Broadway Market). I picked up some Arthur Russell, the latest Mary Lattimore album, Shake Some Action by the Flamin’ Groovies and a Robert Wyatt album. Very happy. We also popped in to Donlon Books on Broadway market, which is a lovely shop. I got Pharmacopoeia: A Dungeness Notebook by Derek Jarman. No more re...

Notes for week of 5 February, 2024

⤳ Highlight of the week was convincing my friend Matt (owner of the amazing When Spaceships Appear record shop) to come down to South East London for a spot of record shopping, a few pints and a pizza. Along the way we stopped in at the Book and Record Bar in West Norwood and the Four Quarters Arcade Bar and Bar Jazu in Peckham. ⤳ I started watching Mr & Mrs Smith this week. I love anything Donald Glover does, and I saw it had got some good reviews so I took a look and I wasn’t disa...
