Notes for week of 18 September, 2023

⤳ We took a ‘road trip’ up north last weekend, to see my parents near Sheffield and Nina’s family near Manchester. It was very nice to see everyone, but I worked out I spent around 12 hours driving over three days. I was shattered once we got back. Some people actually enjoy driving, right? How does that work, exactly?

⤳ I ‘deactivated’ my Twitter account this week, after downloading my entire archive of Tweets. It feels good to be rid of that place.

⤳ I watched the second Extraction film. Even worse than the first. I’m glad there are no more I can punish myself with.

⤳ Much better was the second season of Somebody, Somewhere. Even better than the first series, I would say. So funny but full of pathos and great characters. Loved it. We also finished watching Jury Duty this week. Daft, heart-warming comfort telly at its best (complete with a ‘how the hell are they technically doing this?’ subplot).

⤳ On Friday night we went to Le Beaujolais on Charing Cross Road for steak frites (below) and way too many bottles of wine. So many bottles that they gave is free shots to send us off into the night, and we ended up in the Troy on Hanway Street. Bit too old for those kinds of nights now.

⤳ Some interesting things I’ve read these past few weeks:

No articles to speak of this week, I’ve been a bit busy elsewhere. But I finished Cosmic Scholar: The Life and Times of Harry Smith, and am about a third of the way through Birnam Wood which I will be alternating between Do Interesting and The Internet Con.

⤳ Listening to:

I’m listening to a lot of country-inflected female artists right now:

Also, the new Sufjan is great:
